Journalist Jesse Singal has written a nice piece explaining just why so many Americans are taking prescription pills for psychiatric diagnoses that are being attributed to their emotional complaints. There are many converging influences including doctors who are constantly being educated by the pharmaceutical industry, the big drug companies advertising directly to consumers and the naiveté of the American public generally who has been led to believe that well-being can be found by taking pills. Add to this that psychiatrists now only allocate 10-15 minutes on average for regular patient visits and many people choose this route over psychotherapy and counseling (people are busy) and you have a formula for an increasingly medicated society.
