Mystics knows that the Divine intersects with our individual consciousness, unfolding in ways that open the heart. William Blake knew this and wrote often of his visions. Shamans regularly journey to various dimensions of non-ordinary reality where beings of light and love advise, guide and empower. These poets, mystics and shamans are often regarded with skepticism–did they all make this up through their extraordinary imagination or were they touched by the hand of God? Although there is space provided for in our cultural landscape for these mystic types, rigorously trained contemporary medical doctors generally do not find a place in this cubby hole of frequently marginalized interior experience. But wait! Enter Dr. Eben Alexander, a neurosurgeon who is 2008 fell into a 7-day come due to a bacteria that shut down his cortex, the executive thinking part of our brain. When he returned to normal consciousness after his near death experience, he was a changed man. He discovered that consciousness exists beyond the body (including the brain) and that there are other dimensions to our consciousness that most are not aware of. His visions and personal experiences changed his life forever. The result is a new book he penned called Heaven is Real: A Doctor’s Experience with the Afterlife.
